Fact: Your teeth will shift without a retainer.

Your teeth naturally move over time. The only way to prevent teeth shifting and maintain your new smile is with retainers.

Retainer Instructions: Keep Your Smile Perfect

Wearing and caring for your retainer is an essential part of maintaining your straight, healthy smile after orthodontic treatment. Proper use of your retainer ensures your teeth stay in their new positions, preventing any shifting or regression. Follow these retainer instructions to keep your appliance in great shape and your smile looking its best.

Wear Your Retainer Regularly

  • Wear your retainer at all times unless instructed otherwise by your doctor.
  • Remove your retainer when eating, and always place it in its case to prevent damage or loss. (Many retainers are lost in lunchrooms or restaurants!)

Cleaning Your Retainer

  • Clean your retainer thoroughly once a day with a toothbrush and toothpaste. Use warm—not hot—water.
  • Brushing removes plaque buildup and eliminates odors.
  • Orthodontic appliance cleaners, such as Efferdent®, can be used for additional cleaning but should not replace brushing.

Protecting Your Retainer

  • Always keep your retainer in its case when it’s not in your mouth. Retainers left out are easily misplaced or chewed by pets.
  • Keep retainers away from:
    • Hot water or dashboards in hot cars.
    • Washing machines, pockets, and napkins (they can easily get damaged or thrown away).

Handling Your Retainer with Care

  • Retainers are delicate and can break if mishandled. Treat them with care to ensure they last for years.
  • If your retainer gets lost or broken, call us immediately for a replacement.
  • Do not attempt to adjust your retainer yourself—bring it to your appointment if it needs adjustments.

Tips for Getting Used to Your Retainer

  • Initially, wearing a retainer may feel unusual, and you may find it difficult to speak. Practice speaking, reading aloud, or singing to adjust faster.
  • Always bring your retainer to your appointments so your orthodontist can check its fit and function.

Additional Precautions

  • Remove your retainer before swimming to prevent it from being lost or damaged.
  • Retainer replacements can be costly, but with proper care, your retainer can last for many years.
